Protecting your data
Did you know that when you get rid of your old copier you could be giving away all your data too?
Copiers have hard drives that store scanned documents and so you should be wiping them before disposing them.
We often find sensitive material on copiers and multi-functional devices. These are be documents that have been scanned and include faxes sent or received, which could include bank details, contracts and customer details.
We even found police records on one machine we received.
Some hard drives end up as waste to be processed in the UK and other countries – theoretically, sensitive information about your company or clients could be made available to anyone, including criminal networks.
If you are not adhering to your responsibilities under the Data Protection Act, knowingly or not, you could also find that action will be taken against you, either by your clients or a government agency.
